Lady Eve Balfour
Lady Eve Balfour was a leading pioneer of organic farming. She used her inheritance to purchase New Bells Farm in England at the age of 21.
She was one of the first women in England to be formally educated in agriculture, thumbing her nose at the long standing patriarchy of the field.
Women farm too!
In 1939 Balfour used her position to field test and scientifically compare the results of organic farming versus chemical conventional agriculture.
Her work became another brick in the foundation for the emerging organic farming movement.
She wrote "The Living Soil" in 1943.
